9/29/11 – R&B Pioneer Sylvia Robinson dies

Background

Sylvia Robinson, the singer, songwriter and record producer who formed the Sugar Hill Gang and made the first commercially successful rap recording, died early Thursday morning at a hospital in New Jersey. She was 75.
Ms. Robinson had a notable career as a rhythm and blues singer long before she and her husband, Joe Robinson, formed Sugar Hill Records in 1979; first as Mickey & Sylvia. Her big solo hit was “Pillow Talk.”

Good news for fans of singer-songwriter Jesse Winchester, who canceled his remaining 2011 tour dates after revealing this summer that he had been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. The critically acclaimed musician has successfully undergone treatment and has been declared cancer-free, according to a post from his wife, Cindy. Jesse reached the Top 40 with "Say What?"
